PhD Student in Work and Organizational Psychology

[ 14-01-2011 ] PhD Student in Work and Organizational PsychologyFor the NWO funded project ’Should I stay or should I go?: Neural mechanisms of task engagement under fatigue’, we are seeking a PhD student who has an affinity and ample experience with psycho physiological measuring techniques (e.g. EEG/ERP, EMG, or fMRI) and/or experimental (cognitive) research. The aim of this project is to examine how mental fatigue influences information processing and performance. The central hypothesis is that changes in pupil diameter and in the event-related potential ‘P3’ are markers for the role of the Locus Coeruleus (LC) in fatigue-related performance decline. The LC is a specific core in the brain. In the project, pupil diameter and ERP’s will be measured during sustained performance on cognitively demanding tasks that lead to fatigue. In addition, a pharmacological study will be conducted to further test the main hypotheses in the project. The research will be conducted at the Institute of Psychology. The PhD Student will work at the department of Work and Organizational Psychology, but collaboration with other departments (e.g., Brain and Cognition, Clinical Psychology) is possible.

The candidate should have a Master’s degree with a relevant background in, for example, Experimental, Biological, or Work and Organizational Psychology, or Cognitive Neuroscience, and should be familiar with theories on attention and cognition. Experience with psycho physiological measuring techniques (EEG/ERP, EMG, rTMS. fMRI) and/or experimental studies is preferred. Scientific writing skills and methodological and research skills are required.
